In January of 2008 we had a baby and she didn't make it. In May my Mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told her a puppy. She told me that she thought it was a good idea as long as I wasn't using the puppy as a way to get over my daughter. I have to say that I was not wanting a puppy to get over my daughter, but she did help me heal from loosing her!
We went to the PetCo in Aurora, the one that is not there anymore, on Puppy Sat. to see the puppies. I was number 7 on the list. When my name was called we went into the area and I picked a cute little light grey guy with blue eyes. He was adorable, but he was very shy, and I was afraid my very active 7 year old would be too much for him. So we said goodbye to him and I asked my Mom who she thought. Well there was this puffball with her butt against the kennel door. Mom said that one. So they brought her to the little playpen that we were in and set her down. She ran right over to me and rolled over onto her back. I fell in love. We did not need to look anymore. The ladies at the adoption told us she came from southern Colorado, from a farm That they knew her mom was an Australian Sheppard and they thought her Dad was a sheltie. We took her home that day and introduced her to the kids. My kids fell in love with her. Problem was we didn't know her name yet. We talked about it for a while and then my son who was 13 at the time, and who also has Prader-Willi Syndrome, said Maxie. We all loved it and so did she. She is my loyal companion, she does not leave my side. We do everything together. I knew that my puppy would never take the place of my daughter, but Maxie gave me such love that I was able to move on and give her love right back. It took a little while, but she finally started growing that sheltie nose we don't even question what her mix is, it is pretty obvious. She looks like an Aussie and she looks like a Sheltie. She is beautiful!
