My husband and I had lost our German Shepherd girl Dec 16, 2009. I knew from past experience that the grieving goes on whether or not you adopt a new dog, so I started looking. We wanted a mixed breed as our last 2 dogs had been purebreds with the problems that go with their breeds. Also, I wanted to rescue a dog that might otherwise go homeless. I looked at CPR's site and saw her. It was love at first sight! I showed my husband who said she was "terminally cute." We went to the adoption event at Petco on Colo. Blvd on Christmas Eve of 2009. We were no. 75 on the list, not realizing that coming 30 mins early wasn't early enough. But most people wanted younger puppies and her litter was older, about 3 months old. Another couple adopted her sister who was all white. Our little girl was white with a gold stripe down her back. Their brother was dark gray or black. The 2 girls were clearly terrified and shook; they'd not been socialized to people when younger. They came from New Mexico and may have had a feral mom, we're not sure. We took her home and made her a bed in her kennel and under the coffee table, the 2 places she felt safest. I'd lie on the ground and she would come out to cuddle, then run back to safety. But little by little she began to trust us. We took her to puppy training classes and found out she was smart. She got her Canine Good Companion badge on the first try. We take her to doggie daycare to continue her socialization with other dogs and humans. She is still shy, but much better. She is the smartest, most obedient and affectionate dog I have ever owned! Thank you CPR! And if anyone out there has her littermates, please contact us. We'd love to get together for a play date!
